Leon Loucheur

Regarding my work: I am largely interested in exploring relationships of polarities, light and dark, order and chaos, rough abstraction and highly rendered forms, nature and urban decay. I try to find balance in seemingly incompatible elements, to make them harmonize, each giving credence to the other, as they do in life, coexisting in the framework of an encompassing reality. Stylistically, I believe in the art of inclusion and try not to get caught up in notions of aesthetic “purity,” ground I find redundant and over-trodden. The thrill in making art, for me, is in exploring new combinations, new applications, and hopefully breaking some modest ground.
I draw extensively from my experiences as a child, where, growing up in the Los Angeles area, I was influenced by skateboarding and graffiti culture. Additionally, my father is what can only be described as an extreme wilderness adventurer, so I was frequently spending substantial time in back country environments, communing with nature in a way that few children had the opportunity to. In the end, I would return home to my urban life, my teenage pursuits, my concrete home. I think that dichotomy of experience forms the core of my work.
