Born in Yorkshire in 1977, Jamie Frost is a figurative artist working across media with a specialism in sculpture. He makes work in carved stone and wood, cast bronze and other materials. Jamie is a keen draughtsman, enjoying working on an epic scale. More recently his figurative sculpture and the associated studies have been complemented by a number of sensitively painted portraits in oil. He has exhibited Nationally, including on Cork street, and Internationally. He has been awarded prizes and bursaries and often works to commission.
“Some years ago I saw Michelangelo’s unfinished Pieta at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence. I also encountered the phenomenally dynamic compositions by Giambologna, among others, in the Loggia dei Lanzi. These were profound and formative experiences for me as I was just becoming interested in making figurative art. It’s fair to say my work owes much to the classical tradition, and this is in no small part due to my time as an artist in residence in Tuscany.
I have been fortunate enough to win an award for my work ‘Rag and Bone’ from The Society of Portrait Sculptors. As my practices develop I have become more dependent on the use of a live model and insist on this wherever possible. Spending these amounts of time with a person inevitably imbues the work with a sense of character, leading quite naturally to an interest in portraiture. My work often seems particularly ‘fleshy’ and physical. I enjoy this particularly in a portrait, where it can contrast with the intimacy of depicting a person.”
