ILLUSIONS SERIES 2018-2020
Contrasts and illusions interest me in all possible forms, physical and spiritual, as perception does. In series of works developed before “Illusions”(visible on www.biserkapetrovic.com) , I tried to express the idea that our perception is holistic and depending on memories, by cutting the images in pieces, omitting some of them, by making opening paintings which express the opposite thing when the spectator changes the point of view, etc.
After working on the hand painted “Loving Vincent” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3262342/) first ever long feature film entirely hand painted in oil on canvas, Oscar candidate and awarded on more than 20 world animation festivals, I was under strong impression of the storytelling of the movie. As a result I tried to express the same idea from previous series through the paintings which are connected in a story, as well as through the animation described below. “Illusions” paintings series is my story about perception.
These paintings show 4 characters and my vision of their self-understanding after 2 decades; they talk about perception, love and growing up, especially. I imagined the two men as the same one as young and as older, and the same for the two women. They are practically observing (thinking about) themselves when they were young. In the given order they form a story, but every painting separately is of course open to different interpretations. For this series, I first developed the scenario, hired the theatric actors which acted under my direction, took the photographs and then painted them.
I paint psychological states, inner struggles and emotions.
