After a degree in chemistry and an MBA (Oxford, York and Manchester Universities), I worked for NatWest Bank for 3 years. Since 1976 I have had several businesses and acted as director and financial advisor to some of the fastest growing small technology companies in the UK. Following a period as group finance director of an electronic engineering company, I was a technology business mentor and developer. I was also Chair of the Board of Trustees of Humanists UK for 10 years. A photography autodidact, I was interested in photography from childhood, and a “sabbatical” year in 1982 allowed me to develop this during a trip to China and Japan. Since then I have collected and dealt in photographic prints and books, and developed a series of photographic bodies of work, particularly about the evolution of landscape, cityscapes and inequality.
I was very involved in the Hereford Photography Festival over a period of 10 years, with three years as Festival Director, and serving as Chair and a Patron. I have curated exhibitions for festivals, reviewed portfolios and written on photography for many years, including for the “Oxford Companion to Photography” (2005). My photographic work has been exhibited at Hereford Photography Festival, Derby Format Photography Festival, Brighton Photo Fringe, Printspace Gallery London, Tarpey Gallery Castle Donnington and Leicester Art Gallery.
