DERVIN BATARLO

I am a UK-based collage artist. My hand-cut work is a visual study of the male form and the “ideal body” that is being portrayed across social media platforms. Images are reconstructed to create abstract representation of the subjects.

I was trained in fashion design, that was after I attempted computing science. Creating shapes and cutting paper stemmed from my fashion design training but my obsession with collage started back in 2011, after seeing John Stezaker’s exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. His work encouraged me to play with images and paper. I started creating collage with women’s fashion in mind but it slowly diverted towards my fascination with the male form.

My inspirations come from various sources, from nature and organic objects to aerial photography. I also look at various artists and art movements, such as Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Constructivist graphic design and Bauhaus posters.

I’m interested in conversations about the ever-changing ideal male body. My work reflects the current idealised body and I’m intrigued to see how it will change in the next decade or so.
