Juan Esteban Reyes’ work is related to different processes of visual and material translation. It seeks in painting a space of resistance that allows the strangeness of the images to emerge; its main goal is to challenge the way in which we perceive and relate to what is observed in the environment.
Reyes’ main interest is to explore ways of altering the scale of our perception through painting and drawing. In doing so, he has used different methodologies such us the experimentation with the organic characteristics of painting based on the representation of the body; the development of work directly related to the analysis of the sciences that study the human being (his body, flesh, and psyche); and the exploration of painting as a device to generate a disconnection with the current and massive generation of images from digital media. In this sense, through his visual work, Reyes tries to highlight the dysfunction of massive images by questioning the parameters that currently determine the way we capture the world through the perception of images.
