Through the rich mediums of oils, my exploration of light and colour is an attempt to capture the unique sense of place, time and emotion evoked by each landscape that I paint. Coming from a background of painting scientifically accurate botanicals, I have worked very hard these past several years to move away from purely representational work and to use my knowledge of nature and my creative imagination to paint more inventive abstract landscapes. Using chip brushes and a palette knife, I build a painting in layers, often returning to a “completed painting”, and reworking colour and composition in order to distill the essence of a place. From the mountains to the sea, the diverse environments of New England inspire the work that I do, both plein air and in the studio.
