Sacred Monolith is a totally new concept and all but two of the pieces created under the Sacred Monolith moniker have been made in the last month as an initial push to try and flesh out exactly what it is that I’m trying to do.
The name is a reflection on the idea that the way people gather around creative works (whether that is a painting, an art installation, a movie or even a piece of music) feels almost like an act of worship. Objectively speaking, a sculpture (for example) is just an object like any other, yet we stand around it in reverence spending so much time looking at it and discussing it among each other. If you imagine an alien species looking down on us, I wonder what they would make of this behaviour.
My goal is to create a body of work that creates intrigue, discussion and appreciation without necessarily providing any obvious explanation for its purpose. If you feel like you are drawn to keep looking but you don’t know why, then I have succeeded.
With that being said, I also like to share sketches and studies that will later be used for larger pieces. One of my favourite things to do is study nature, flowers and still life, and use those forms later in larger pieces of work. There are very few natural forms more interesting to study than skulls.
