MICHAEL KERBOW

For the past decade my art has explored the ecological impact of our industrialized society. I am intrigued by what motivates our collective actions, and how they may be influencing our future viability. I seek to question the rationale of our choices, and try to reveal the dichotomy that may exist between what we desire, and what we manifest. My paintings are allegories about our world, and visions of our possible future. I attempt to distill what I see happening today, so others may better understand what could await us tomorrow.

Climate change is a major theme in my art. This is because I consider it to be an existential threat and the most important issue we face today. The challenge with making art about such a serious topic, however, is having the work be engaging. No one wants to be confronted by sobering content that makes them feel uncomfortable and turn away. This is why I use visual devices such as vibrant colors, intricate detail, and sometimes even humor, to make my work alluring. I try to make beautiful, imaginative paintings to intrigue the viewer, so they will be more apt to take in and consider the more somber narratives that may be found there.
