TERRY BEARD

My work has always been informed by my surroundings and elements within the environment, but a studio and house move approximately three years ago into an area of black fen has had a big influence on the development of my work. Flat farmland and areas of woodland are stitched together by dykes and drains, and in winter lakes appear on the low-lying fields.

During lockdown walking was a regular occupation, and influences from these walks manifested themselves in my work, which is an attempt to capture the essence and atmosphere of the landscape and the areas of water within it.

I work with screens to build up layers of colour and texture, incorporating areas of collage and acrylic paint in order to achieve the effects I am after. I record the landscape in photographs and sketches as reminders, but work instinctively, making intuitive decisions as the work progresses.
