The Summer Isles
Positioned off the West coast of Scotland near Ullapool, the Summer Isles have become the main focuses of my painting recently.
The history, the beauty of the land, sea, air, islands, weaving in and out of view and sparking your imagination. Mysterious, ageless, rich with physical and spiritual space.
My hope is to capture the essence of the places I am drawn to, to create a landscape that resonates with the viewer on a deeper level.
The more time I spend exploring this coast the further I find myself under its spell. The thrall of the winds, the cries of the sea birds and the timeless beauty of the land. The ethereal quality of the islands as they flicker in and out of view, one moment illuminated, the next shrouded in mist.
Colour is an important element in my work. I am fascinated by the power of colour and often start my work in very vibrant colours even if theses become totally covered in the final composition. I am drawn to the works of Rothko Diebenkorn and Agnes Martin for their emotional power lying alongside a deep sense of stillness.
