Each painting depicts a specific experience of time and space. In a realistic style I paint my subjects in sunlit lighting with egg-tempera paint which I prepare myself. I’m interested in reflections, the play of light and shadows. The fascination for change is leading principle in my choices for subjects and the theme of my work, the awareness that nothing remains what it is. As a painter in each painting I anchor a specific moment and lift it out over time. Gardens, parks and reflections in water surfaces form the main subjects in my recent paintings.
Quote about my work by Edwin Becker – Chief Curator of Exhibitions Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam:“Marcel van Hoef holds a mirror up to us and presents not only his own personal interpretation of nature, but also confronts us with our own innermost feelings and thereby touches a sensitive chord with us. If art can achieve this, it represents a successful symbiosis between art and life.”
