Phoebe Stewart Carter was born in the UK, and was raised between Gloucestershire and Maryland, USA.
In 2017 she joined artist Nick Beer at his studio in Salisbury, England. While in Salisbury she was introduced to academic drawing techniques that were taught through the 19th century. Being determined to further her education in these traditional methods of drawing and painting she travelled to Italy to pursue intensive training. From 2018 to 2021 Phoebe furthered her studies at the Florence Academy of Art, based in Florence, Italy. Currently Phoebe is an Artist in Residence and teacher at the Florence Academy of Art.
Phoebe’s work includes portraits, landscapes, still lives and figurative work. Although the subject matter differs, all her work is executed from life and predominantly in a naturally lit setting; she believes these conditions are crucial for capturing realism in any medium. This is also true of any commissioned work she undertakes, particularly portraits where a true likeness is achieved more accurately when face to face with the sitter.
