Steve Dodd is a landscape painter.
The landscapes he paints are the wild places near his home in Portsmouth where he has lived and worked all his life. He did a fine art degree at Portsmouth Polytechnic many years ago, when he was fortunate enough to have been taught by Miles Richmond, a pupil of the great David Bomberg. It was his uncompromising approach to drawing, coupled with his delight in the spiritual possibilities to be found in the act of making art, that has stayed with Dodd all these years.
The painterly language that he has since evolved, is designed to evoke the experience of being alive in the place he is painting. The wind, the rain, the ever-changing light, are all to be celebrated whilst relishing the sensation of applying oil paint to a prepared surface.
