LAMA ISSA

I am a self-taught Syrian – Greek artist, living in London.

My passion for art began as a child; all I remember from my school and college years is painting and drawing. However since I moved to London in 2012 to study a master’s degree in digital media, studies and my city job drew me away from art. But since I had my daughter Nina I decided to dedicate my limited free time to something I truly love, but I had neglected, which is painting. My baby girl inspired me to get back to my passion as I want to be an example for her to follow her heart in life and do something that she is passionate about.

Untouched and wild landscapes, nature, the evening sky, and sunsets provide endless inspiration to my work.

I am inspired by the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

My painting process begins with taking a walk in nature or going through past photographs of places I’ve visited and sketch down ideas. I like to experiment with both traditional and contemporary methods of landscape painting. Most of my paintings are reworked several times.

I am at my happiest when I am outside connected to nature and I try to reflect this through my paintings. I like to incorporate vivid colours and movement and through experimenting, I create paintings that are physically exciting and rich. In my work, my goal is to capture nature’s energy and strive to show its beauty. I mainly focus on dramatic dawn and dusk landscape scenes.
