This series of paintings has been created using deep learning models which generate images from text prompts. The paintings aim to question our evolving relationship with artificial intelligence. The portraits are deliberately numbered so as not to humanise them, but do the painterly texture and gestural marks convey more of a sense of human emotion and began to create a relationship between the viewer and the ‘sitter’. Does the viewer respond differently to the character in the painting after discovering it is a.i? Or is the a.i becoming more of a sentient being in its own right?
These painting installations each incorporate a coded micro:bit connected to a PIR (passive infrared) sensor and an LED bulb.
Each painting is only lit and viewable once the audience member comes close and activates the motion sensor attached to the microbit and lights the bulb. It is only our human intervention that can create artificial intelligence. We are [currently] the only ones who can ultimately decide what the future of AI will be.
