SIAN VERNON

Based in Sheffield UK, Sian Vernon is a contemporary mixed-media artist. Her work reflects her deep connection with the wild moorland landscapes of the Peak District National Park.

My work explores the experience of being in the landscape – walking on the moors, wandering through heather and coarse grasses, jumping between boulders and being battered by strong winds, watching crows and kestrels overhead, or just gazing into the distance from a rocky outcrop. For me it is a feeling of wonder and freedom, along with a deep sense of connection, belonging, and history.

Painting and drawing intuitively, I use a variety of media and tools to capture the energy and atmosphere of these elemental landscapes. Through a subdued palette punctuated by occasional bursts of bright colour, I explore the delicate balance between nature and abstraction. Bold, gestural marks layered with freely applied paint and expressive lines capture the energy and atmosphere of the landscape – the expansive skies, craggy horizons, and tangled vegetation that define the bleak beauty of the windswept moors.

I live and work in Sheffield, UK, but my heart is in the tiny village where I grew up, on the edge of the Peak District moors, between Sheffield and Hathersage.

I JUST LISTENED
SO NEAR YET SO FAR
THE GLOOM WAS PRETTY HEAVY
DISTANCE AND TIME
IT’S DARK BUT I KNOW THE WAY
