THOMAS EVANS

ELECTRIC VEINS

– the theme may start to be sticking out a bit more prominently now that you can see my experimental process

– Follows the same technique as “headless protocol” I create an abstract piece and from that carve out silhouettes with my black paint

– This was made under the influence of a delirious amount of coffee, I had not created anything that day but was still eager – I started this at about 10pm coffee in hand and finished at about 1am I think. All the while listening to “In Rainbows” by Radiohead (one of my favourite albums)

– This is also probably the most fun I have had making something, I was fully immersed (and not to sound like a pretentious wanker!) but the experience itself was borderline spiritual: I was fully in the “flow state” as it were, and by the end of it finished with this haunting looking piece

– Also style inspired by Francis Bacon

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN

– Again, a nod to corporate greed.

– Inspired by commissioned work from Danish Artist Jens Haaning who provided two blank canvases as his submission (after being given 70 grand! The cheek of him!)

– Also sort of pointing fun at ^ his work and making something that I would rather see in a gallery

– Quasi-inspired by Philip Guston’s work (particularly the hands) he’s one of my favourite artists as well

GLUTTONS AT A BANQUET

– Follows my more experimental style

– I love working with black and incorporating that with bright, colourful figurative pieces

– Created out of a frustration with general corporate greed (a running theme in my more recent work) billionaires who take up resources and leave regular people high and dry etc etc.

– Inspired by one of my favourite artists “Francis Bacon”

HEADLESS PROTOCOL

– Again, experimental style. I start the canvas with a bright abstract design and begin to subtract space with my black paint until I have these two eerie characters

– Very off-the-cuff technique and is built off my own intuition (e.g. the figure on the right was supposed to have his full skull but I decided it would look better to remove the bottom jaw and divide the head/neck with the white dotted line)

– Headless protocol is about shutting yourself off when someone is shouting at you (I’m quite good at that now!) It could be from teachers, parents, figures of authority etc. but everyone has experienced it, where they shut off their mind and block someone out.
