RONNIE ACKLING

I have always been drawn to urban and underground structures throughout my time as a photographer. This focus gives a reality that some people may not normally notice. It feels like lifting up a rock; the dark underneath seems to hold more interest than what be first apparent on its surface.

Alongside this need to explore the underneath, is the fact that I choose to do it just before sunrise. This time of day offers curious light opportunities that you would not normally experience- sunrises offer more than sunsets. A big attraction to strolling the streets, cities and landscapes in the early morning is the quiet solitude it offers. This reality of loneliness is something that I really enjoy and try to interweave in my images.

I also find discarded and mundane objects both peculiar and fascinating in equal measure. Curious man-made objects left in urban and public spaces tell a story of their own; they offer an interesting juxtaposition that everyone reads into in their own way. Objects like traffic cones, shopping trollies and chairs have inherent compositional qualities that I find hard to ignore.
