‘I am a figurative painter specialising in portraiture. My work is influenced by the techniques of the Old Masters (particularly those of the 17th and 19th centuries). I am fascinated by portraiture because it is the synthesis of the personalities of the subject (conveyed through body language and facial expression) and of the artist (expressed in the brushwork, tonalities, etc). My work is primarily a study of light, atmosphere and abstract design, all of which I try to use to express those elements of a subject’s character that most define them.
I try to paint honest portraits, searching for the true character of the sitter, and I would hope to capture something of the complexity of character that is common to us all.Â
I have been fortunate enough to paint the portraits of many interesting people over the years, such as HM The Queen, HM The King, the eminent mathematician Sir Andrew Wiles, and the politician Lord Peter Mandelson.’
