DEBBIE TAYLOR-KERMAN

My work is informed by my firm belief that it’s critical and necessary to embrace diversity. I’m compelled by the underdog. The courage of “social outcasts”, who walk their own walk, moves me. I’m passionate about women’s issues; I strive to combat racism and fight for equality and inclusion.

This collection of works is inspired by the NYC subway. I see the glorious diversity of beautiful humans from all different backgrounds, going about their daily lives in peace (for the most part). We have more in common with each other than we could ever imagine. Our differences are what makes us unique but can also sadly make people afraid and threatened. I’ve always been fascinated by people different from myself; hence my love affair with seeing different folks sitting next to each other on the subway. I imagine how different their lives are, yet we all deal with basic similar issues in life; thus, the titles in this collection are inspired by the mundane.
