I am a UK-based artist who creates abstract faces using mixed media, often drawing inspiration from the world of science fiction. My artistic process is an exciting and unpredictable journey, as I never quite know who will appear on the page. Each new character brings a fresh sense of excitement and discovery.
My work begins with a reference face for inspiration, but from there, I allow my intuition to guide me. My first step is to make marks with acrylic ink, applied with a dropper top. This method allows for happy accidents, which can often lead to beautiful and unexpected marks. I then spray the ink with water to create even more intriguing textures and patterns.
Next, I apply charcoal to begin shaping the face, using a sponge brush to create mid-tones and add texture. I find this method allows me to create a sense of depth and dimensionality to the piece, bringing the face to life in a way that is uniquely my own.
The next step is to add white highlights with acrylic paint, using a sponge brush to create marks that are beyond my control. This process allows for exciting marks to be created, and I often find that these unpredictable marks add a sense of energy and movement to the piece.
Finally, I use wax pastels to add flourishes of color and create intricate details in the piece. This process is perhaps the most satisfying for me, as it allows me to truly bring each character to life in a way that is unique and expressive.
