I’m a contemporary landscape artist based in the South of the UK. Since graduating with a BA in Fine Art from University College Falmouth, I’ve had various group shows along the South Coast and Wales.
I’m completely and utterly drawn to wild skies and mountainous landscapes and the emotional grounding that these destinations give me. It is within the mountains that I find my fortress of solitude, restoring connections from what has been lost, and gaining vast inspiration for work back in the studio.
Within my paintings there is always a sense of a wild place in all its elements, whether this is strikingly obvious or in a more subtle abstract manner. I love to create a feeling of distance and familiarity in my work, underlining my intrigue into the unknown of a wild world that has so much to teach us, whilst still feeling very much part of it. When in the studio, drawings and notes that I’ve collected whilst out in the elements are put to one side, allowing my memory and emotions to be the primary source. I paint to re-create and explore my emotional attachment to what I like to call “Land Giants”, not to produce a detailed representation of what I have seen. This way of working allows my paintings to grow organically and natural, much like the main focus of my inspiration, creating ephemeral qualities and that feeling of memory.
The fascination of the wild elements of the natural world was imbedded into me at a young age, with yearly trips into the mountains of North Wales, that were filled with plenty of adventure and possibilities. The mountains are my second home, providing me with clarity and endless inspiration.
