EMILIE FANTUZ

In a world that often demands a singular, digestible narrative, my work invites viewers to perceive multiple layers of meaning, embracing the complexity of human experience. My paintings explore the liminal spaces created by reflections, both literal and metaphoric. Reflection is a layered concept: one definition speaks to the physical act of light bouncing back an image, while another refers to deep contemplation. My compositions engage both meanings, documenting reflections that I observe in real-life settings and intentionally altering them to disrupt perceptions and question assumptions.

My unconventional application of paint—drawing the medium across a canvas with a palette knife—is part of my process of fracturing the image and disrupting clarity. It doesn’t hide the physical qualities of the painting or create a seamless, super-real surface that suspends a viewer’s disbelief. Instead, all the pieces or shapes that come together to construct a scene are visible. In my compositions, fragmentation, refraction, and layered reflections merge past and present, creating images that shift between memory, immediate experiences and unknown futures. I aim to create a visual dialogue that lingers beyond the initial encounter, sparking curiosity and contemplation about the self and the spaces we inhabit.
