EMILY KIRBY

The majority of my work draws on the study of people and wildlife, using the figure as the central object for interpretation.

I am interested in exploring methods of painting that allow me to communicate and express my interpretation of the human condition and how we relate to the world around us. This includes themes surrounding sexuality, identity and our relationship with the natural world.

I was born into a family of artists in Zambia. These roots continue to have a deep impact on my work. I regularly return to Africa to paint and exhibit.

Our need to record and interpret our experience through art, continues throughout history. By looking at art history I think many of the core issues remain the same.

I am primarily interested in moving away from being representative, focusing more on using the figure as a vessel through which more abstract layering of colour and form can transmit an energy.
