I am an abstract and semi-abstract landscape artist, working mainly with acrylic paints. The paintings I create are my internal response to the power and beauty of nature. I am particularly intrigued by the contrast of light and shadow, wonder and mystery.
Growing up I enjoyed the rugged beauty of the Burbage moors of Derbyshire and the coastline of the Lleyn peninsula in North Wales. My inspiration comes from the shifting palettes of the sky, sunlight through the trees, wide open heather clad moorlands, waves breaking onto the beach and the shining pebbles they leave behind. Using my intuition, I work with layers of coloured paint and expressive marks, which slowly evolve into organic shapes and textures as an image begins to emerge. At this point my response to the work becomes more considered as I carefully begin to resolve the painting.
I have previously explored a wide range of craft disciplines which took me as far as an MA in Contemporary Craft, however it is in the process of painting that I find complete absorption and begin to find myself.
I am also a qualified teacher and spend my weekdays in a local prison as an art tutor.
