The concept of “Mysterium Tremendum” (Rudolf Otto, 1917) describes the human experience before divinity as both terrifying and fascinating, a “hushed, trembling, and speechless humility of the creature in the presence of that which is a Mystery inexpressible”. These images are a visual interpretation of those ideas, a look into the mystery and strangeness that permeate our existences, and our sense of alienation towards it.
Thought I’ve made some of these photos with other series in mind, I see this selection is a sort of synthesis of everything I’ve done as a photographer so far – it isn’t so much a collection of what I would consider my best photos, but rather an attempt to find the underlying themes beneath it all.
