STEPHANIE AYKROYD

Working primarily with oils, Canadian artist, Stephanie Aykroyd explores light and the beauty of nature as a way of expressing a sense of place and belonging, or sometimes a longing for them. She is less interested in ancestral roots linked to specific geographic locations and more intrigued by our felt, and often inexplicable allure to place, both land and sea. Her interest in land memory, time, and connection also informs her work.

Stephanie learned the foundations of oil painting as a teenager, studying the Old Masters at a small school in Toronto, and experimenting over the years to find an expression that feels like her own. Inspired by rugged, atmospheric landscapes and vast skies, Stephanie shares her love of wild places, as well as her reverence for the earth in paintings that are mysterious and eternal, natural and serene. Recent travels to the UK and the dramatic beauty of the Shetland Isles became an endless source of inspiration for Stephanie’s latest collection of paintings. Stephanie currently lives and works in the Almaguin Highlands in rural Ontario, Canada.
