GEPPY PISANELLI

My artistic research is rooted in an exploration of painting as a profound medium of communication. Through meticulous planning and a focus on the semantic and metaphorical resonance of imagery, I construct compositions that extend beyond the surface, inviting deeper engagement with the narrative and symbolic dimensions of the visual world.

Central to my work is the creation of archetypal images—works that may initially appear as reproductions of reality but gradually reveal layers of metaphorical and mental associations. These images serve as conduits for reflection, encouraging viewers to consider the expressive potential of painting in analyzing human existence and the multifaceted nature of reality.

I aim to craft “threshold images” that invite the spectator to step into the scene, much like entering a theatrical stage, where the unfolding narrative probes the complexities of human nature. Through recurring motifs I call “minimum survival units”—bridges, tents, poles, ropes, sea rafts, and human figures—I strive to transcend cultural boundaries, presenting timeless and archetypal forms that resonantes universally. These elements navigate the tension between themes of abandonment and hope, solitude and community, mirroring contemporary societal dilemmas and evoking a collective reckoning with issues such as migration, war, pandemics, and climate change.
